Although there are many services that promise to get you listed on thousands of search engines, 96% of the traffic is concentrated in the top 25 or so Search Engines and this number is consolidating rapidly. Additionally, most of the top Search Engines prefer that you manually submit your web. Many of the search engines view automated submissions as spam and will not list your site. Listing a site with a search engine does not guarantee acceptance or rank among the other sites hoping to sell the same product of service. As an example searching for car on Google generated 7,340,000 listings. When was the last time you looked past the first couple of pages of search engine results for an item? Three Types of Inclusion There are basically three means for getting your site listed with the Search Engines. The first and still most popular is to submit your site to the Search Engines and Directories for a free listing. Of course there is no guarantee that you will be accepted and the process may take weeks of even months. Your rank will be solely determined by how well you optimized your site and how relevant the Search Engine feels your site is to the inquiry being placed. This method requires a lot of patience. The second type of inclusion is paid inclusion. These databases require a fee to include your site. They then feed the information about your site to various Search Engines and directories. Inktomi and Fast are two examples of this type of service. They require a fee but in return they will index your site in about 48 hours and will re-index it every 48 hours or so. The list type of inclusion is Pay per Click. This method guarantees position and you pay a fee for each customer that clicks on your listing. Using the pay per click method its very important to research the key words and phrases on which you are willing to bid. If for example you are selling insurance in Raleigh NC and you bid for the word insurance most of the people visiting your site will leave without ever having purchased a thing. But you will still have a big bill. It would be better to focus on "Raleigh insurance" instead. The Search Engines are important to the success of your web site, treat them with the respect they deserve. They are trying to provide a viable service to their customers. Remember, preparation is the key to getting your site ranked highly within the search engine. |
